Field Services Technical Officer

The role

As part of our Naval Combat Systems group, The Technical Officer is responsible for testing, diagnosing, repairing, maintaining and upgrading a wide range of electronic, electrical and electro-mechanical equipment on RAN ships, test sites and facilities.

Further, the successful candidate will:

  • Participate in the ongoing support, repairs, maintenance and upgrade of Royal Australian Navy systems including Command and Control, Fire Control System and Primary Search Radar equipment for ship and shore installations.
  • Assist in test, acceptance and set to work of hardware at factory and ship/shore installations
  • Take an active role in the hardware maintenance and support work carried out in the Saab Workshop and test sites.
  • Conduct equipment repairs to Lowest Replaceable Unit level.
  • Ensure adherence to approved work practices with specific responsibility for ESD prevention and electronic equipment handling practices
  • Write technical documentation such as reports, system and sub-system specifications.
  • Work at customer test facilities/ships interstate and occasionally overseas.
  • Frequent travel interstate and/or overseas
  • Ad hoc administrative duties.

About you

Your skills and experience will include:

  • Experience with workmanship inspection and adherence to stipulated standards.
  • Proficiency in IPC workmanship standards.
  • Proficient in the use of PCs and relevant software applications (Microsoft Office Suite etc).
  • Experience in circuits and wiring fault finding in PC and industrial computing bus systems (cPCI, VME).
  • Previous experience in field fault diagnosis and repair of electronic and electrical equipment.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001:2000 practices.


As Defence security clearance is required for this role, applicants will be required to hold an Australian Defence Security Clearance to NV1 level or have the ability to gain one.
